Rueben

Rueben didn’t just arrive at Holbrook—he adopted us in 2024. Living nearby, Rueben belonged to a neighbour and was well-loved, but that didn’t stop him from making frequent escapes from his own field. Time and again, our clever boy found his way to us, determined to be with his new friends, Sammy and Whisper.

It quickly became clear that Rueben was longing for equine companionship, and after several heartfelt conversations, his owner kindly agreed to let him make Holbrook his permanent home. His days of sneaky visits are now behind him—he stays happily in our fields, exactly where he wants to be.

Rueben is in his senior years, and we’re fully aware that ongoing veterinary care may be costly. But when a horse shows you where he feels safe, where he finds his herd, and where he wants to spend the rest of his days… how could we say no?

Gentle, sociable, and endlessly endearing, Rueben has brought joy (and a bit of mischief!) to our sanctuary. He’s a reminder that sometimes, the animals choose us—and we’re honoured to be chosen.
